Leadership is a critical factor for the success of an organization, and while there have been a plethora of studies regarding organizational leadership, conflicting literature has made it difficult to determine what effect gender has on leadership styles. In this study, it was questioned whether a gender difference exists among a sample of male and female information technology (IT) leaders. A non-experimental descriptive survey design was selected to examine whether IT leaders exhibit gendered differences in leadership styles. Leadership style was surveyed using the Bass and Avolio's research (1994a, 2004) on leadership, which laid the foundation for the study and is based on transformational, transactional, and laissez-faire leadership styles. Information for 110 participants who were IT leaders from the United States was collected through an online survey administered by Qualtrics. The Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire 5X Short (MLQ) was employed to evaluate the self-perceived leadership style of each participant. The data were analyzed using independent samples t-test, Mann-Whitney U test, and other descriptive measures to examine whether there was a significant difference in the leadership style preference along the gender lines. The analysis revealed the absence of significant difference between male and female IT leaders on all leadership attributes except for Management-by-Exception (Passive) attribute where male IT leaders were significantly more likely than their women counterparts to exhibit this trait. The results are intended to assist IT leaders and IT companies in designing policies for hiring, promoting, and training that could increase the female representation in the pipeline. The key findings added to the body of knowledge by extending the understanding of leadership style and gender.
