According to the United States Supreme Court Miranda v. Arizona (1966) decision, suspected persons are required to be read their Fifth Amendment rights prior to a police interrogation. The Miranda rights address the legal options of suspects during interrogations, especially vulnerable populations such as non-native speakers of English. Much research has been conducted on comprehension of legal language by non-native speakers of English. Studies have analyzed multiple versions of the Miranda warning from different states and localities in order to analyze the differences. Through the collection of the 62 Miranda warnings used by the counties of New York State and a survey of 62 participants, this study investigates the lexical variety of the Miranda warnings used in New York State and pinpoints the components non-native speakers of English have difficulty fully understanding. Results demonstrate that non-native speakers of English have difficulty explaining the rights given to them depending on the clarity of the warning and which component is emphasized and a low lexical diversity amongst the New York State Miranda warnings. This study aims to pinpoint the most problematic components of the Miranda warning and offer a revised version.
