A large body of empirical research exists within the realm of juror bias and decision-making. There are a multitude of factors that contribute to juror bias, including, but not limited to, the presence or absence of inadmissible evidence, pre-trial publicity, eyewitness testimony, the CSI effect, and defendant characteristics. Factors impacting juror bias have expanded to characteristics of key trial participants, particularly attorneys. Less research exists with regard to the role of salient attorney characteristics, specifically race and gender, in juror decision-making. This study seeks to assess mock juror attitudes toward two salient attorney characteristics: race and gender. Participants were recruited by email advertisement through the Chicago School of Professional Psychology as well as through social media (e.g., Facebook). Participants were asked to complete a demographic survey, followed by an 18-item measure of overt bias toward attorneys. Participants' responses were composited into three subgroups for data analysis: Bias Against African-American Attorneys, Bias Against Female Attorneys, and Bias Against Female African-American Attorneys. Bivariate correlations revealed weak significant relationships between participants' responses on all three subscales. Independent samples t-tests revealed no significant differences between participants' race and gender and reported perceptions of attorney characteristics. Implications of the findings and areas of research were also explored.
