First-generation community college students encounter a variety of challenges when transitioning into college life. These students experience a cultural shift that is made more complicated by the fact they are the first in their families to attend college. In addition, the California Community College system has a problem with student completion, whereas just 48.2% of students complete their educational goal within a 6-year timeframe (California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office [CCCCO], 2018c). First Year Experience (FYE) programs are a high-impact practice that can offer critical support to first-generation students during their onboarding process to the institution, thus supporting student retention and success. This qualitative study gives voice to first-generation students that have participated in an FYE program at one suburban California Community College. One-to-one interviews were conducted to answer the following research questions: (a) How do first-generation community college students perceive their experiences in a First Year Experience program? and (b) To what extent do these students believe their participation in a First Year Experience program contributes to their success? The findings of this study indicate that FYE programs provide transition support for first-generation students, offer academic support and guidance for first-generation students, and increase student involvement and engagement by providing a welcoming environment and allowing students to create meaningful connections to faculty and staff at the institution. This research concludes that all California Community Colleges should invest in the development of a First Year Experience program to support the transition of their first-generation students.
