In an 1886 letter to his close friend and editor Vladimir Chertkov, Lev Tolstoi writes, "Woman is destined to serve mankind through her children." Tolstoi was quite serious about women fulfilling their maternal role, the only calling for which they are all fated. His oeuvre is rife with representations of maternity, including pregnancy, childbirth, and the myriad concerns associated with childcare. Breastfeeding in particular figures prominently: the act of nursing occurs frequently throughout Tolstoi's work and functions as a multivalent image. As I argue, breastfeeding holds significant implications that reach beyond Tolstoi's personal biography and the mundane questions of the nursery. This dissertation is devoted to the connections that Tolstoi draws between breastfeeding and the "woman question" (zhenskii vopros), the changing structure of Russia's traditionally patriarchal society, and his accompanying anxieties about Russia's Europeanization and modernization. As I demonstrate, the breast and lactation function as symbols that Tolstoi deploys to question or condemn the social and political currents that were carrying Russia toward the twentieth century: at this time the breastfeeding mother becomes for Tolstoi a bulwark for patriarchal order, with breastfeeding functioning as one of the mother's chief virtues as a human being.
