The presented thesis introduces our work of extending high-resolution x-ray 3D imaging towards extended samples. With the advent of x-ray sources with higher brightness and better coherence, as well as the rise of the needs to examine the fine structures of large objects in the field of materials science, biology, and electrical engineering, it becomes increasingly important to understand more about the problems and issues that are directly related to the feasibility of such heavy-duty imaging. One of such complicating factors is the radiation dose imposed to the sample. In addition, tools are needed for the community to collect, handle, process, and analyze the data of a large object, taking into account the differences of these imaging tasks in terms of both physics and experimental practices from what are usual for imaging smaller objects. We will introduce in this thesis a comprehensive model that we developed to describe the radiation dose caused by ionizing radiations to thick samples with the consideration of complicating factors that are specific to extended specimens. We will then introduce the tools that we built to image samples beyond the limits of the field of view and the depth of focus, respectively. Together, these form the framework for addressing issues in multiple aspects of large-scale x-ray 3D imaging.
