This dissertation study provides the background and rationale on experiences in using YouTube to emotionally connect with a group and construct meaning after a tragic event, particularly as it relates to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer (LGBTQ+) community. This completed dissertation also summarizes existing literature on social media (e.g., YouTube, Facebook, Twitter) and its potential to address grief, tragedy, personal life meaning, and emotional support for people in general and more specifically the LGBTQ+ community. Using the literature review as a starting point, a research question was proposed, examining how individuals use YouTube to emotionally connect after a tragic event. Finally, the use of narrative inquiry was conducted to extract narratives from four out of eight participants regarding the experience watching reaction videos about the Pulse nightclub shooting. Data were collected, organized, and interpreted using the interpretative phenomenological approach (IPA) and Riessman's five-level representation model. The use of Labov's model of narrative analysis, and a thematic breakdown of each transcript, revealed a link between the individual experiences expressed by participants, and an interpretive reconstruction of the narratives by the researcher.
