This thesis explores sound-visual improvisation in a semi-structured environment, where the performers (musician and visual artist) who work within the scopes of their native disciplines are given minimal structures with a degree of freedom for live improvisation. An empirical study has been conducted where all ensemble rehearsals and performances were observed and videotaped. A member checks procedure and a focus group discussion have been employed after each rehearsal and performance in order to validate and understand their actions and thoughts when the improvisation unfurls. The results and findings have been divided into two sections - the functions of verbal communications for building up a common ground of information and the modes of non-verbal communications during the performances. These included the modes of coordination within the content (i.e. the provided semi-structured composition) and the process of collaboration that maintained the interactional dynamics moment-by-moment during the process of collaboration. By compiling the findings, the results provide some initial framework into how the performers from different modalities develop an acute moment-by- moment sense of coordination and communicate with each other as the performance unfolds.
