This thesis is an attempt to provide a historical background to the visual imagery present within an obscure Buddhist temple, the Sapugaskanda Rajamahavihara (Great Royal Temple) in Sri Lanka. However, the absence of manuscripts and literary evidence that usually accompany a royal temple hinders such a presentation and a thorough visual analysis. The various approaches used in the field of art history are of significant importance in highlighting the possible chronological development of this temple within the broader mural traditions of Sri Lanka. The immense variety of murals and sculpture in the image house of this temple provide many visual clues to build a possible historical context for this temple. Though located in a predominantly Sinhala Buddhist locality, the content of the painted narratives and sculptures in this temple suggest a plethora of local, regional and foreign influence. The range of imagery suggests a form of pre-colonial globalization that existed before the advent of western colonialism where individuals (lay and monastic), texts and literature circulated within South and Southeast Asia with Sri Lanka being in the midst of such exchange. Observing these visual representations for their significant subject matter, form, and style and comparing them with imagery found in other surrounding royal temples helps to articulate the chronological progression of this temple. Also, the later additions that have been made to the imagery and the architecture has in some cases, significantly altered the original function of the image house. While the causes for such modifications remain unknown, questioning the later developments and the religious context of the temple enables a further insight to the changes in values, customs and the possible royal patronage that helped to shape this temple through its course in history.
