This qualitative research study intends to explore the educational experiences of principal ethnic minority students enrolled in institutions of higher education to understand better how educational technology, specifically online learning, may mediate experiences of perceived discrimination. Despite interventions being implemented in institutions of higher education by way of laws, diversity programs, and cultural awareness initiatives, principal ethnic minority students still report higher incidents of perceived discrimination. There is also research that suggests that perceived discrimination experienced by this group may contribute to poorer health outcomes that may contribute to poorer academic attainment. The problem addressed is the impact of perceived discrimination on the lives of principal ethnic minority students and whether technology-aided learning can improve these experiences. The researcher retrieved the data used in this study from the interviews of principal ethnic minority students currently enrolled or enrolled in colleges and universities within the past two years. The researcher conducted individual interview sessions to collect responses to 14 questions regarding experiences of perceived discrimination in online and on-campus courses. Nine themes related to aspects of perceived discrimination or feelings of unequal treatment experienced in the online or on-campus classrooms emerged using qualitative content analysis. The themes identified included: feeling uncomfortable, excluded and ignored, held to a different standard, unequal access to education, feeling less than, feeling less discrimination online, preference for traditional learning, constant stress and anger, and; strong social identity. These findings provide significant evidence that technology and online learning can be used as a platform to further promote diversity and inclusion in higher education.
