The purpose of this study was to investigate whether acculturation, conformity, religiosity, and age at the time of immigration are contributing factors that influence the attitudes of individuals who identify with the Middle Eastern culture towards seeking mental health services. Mental health is perceived differently by various immigrant populations based on cultural differences and access to mental health services in their countries of origin. In many countries mental illness is highly stigmatized, increasing negative attitudes towards seeking mental health services. In order to examine the impact of these factors, a quantitative research design utilized a web-based survey investigating whether acculturation, conformity, religiosity, and age at the time of immigration influences a Middle Eastern individual's attitude towards seeking mental health services. The sample size was comprised of 278 adult participants who were descendants of the Middle Eastern culture. The data was analyzed using a Pearson's product-moment correlation and a multiple linear regression. Results suggest that acculturation, conformity, and age at the time of immigration were contributing factors to the participant's attitude towards seeking mental health services. Limitations to this study included the response bias, definition of the Middle East, limited sample, and limited generalizability of the results. This research supports the belief in existing differences in attitudes among individualistic and collectivistic cultures towards seeking mental health services. Future research should examine the differences among American and Middle Eastern individuals, offer various translations of the survey to obtain a larger sample, implement a longitudinal study that follows participants to gain a better understanding of how utilization of services changes over time, in order to determine and cultural barriers to seeking mental health services.
