The construction of Latin American identities is primarily based on the affirmation of colonial Western values and the denial of our indigenous roots. In this context, what is the significance of family histories? Is reconnecting with your native ancestry a possible counter narrative to the history of colonialism? This writing will interrogate the colonial narratives that enforce the state of oblivion about our native tradition and contribute to the present discussions held in Argentinian and Chilean Mapuche communities. The Mapuche communities in Chile and Argentina pose a clear instance of what Gerald Vizenor identifies as "survivance" and, on that line, I immerse into the history of my own family to reclaim our Mapuche roots. The methodology for this project combines interviews with my relatives, archival research, NAIS scholarship and personal memories to revise our family's past and understand the generational cut that impede our current knowledge of our native culture.
