Society has seen many changes as a result of the rise of digital media. Celebrity culture is no exception to these changes, as the rise of new forms of social media continues to shift the climate of celebrity culture, contribute new types of celebrity, and reduce the distance between celebrities and fans. Social media have enabled celebrities to interact more directly with fans and have made it possible to develop closer connections with fans than ever before. As a response to this shift, the purpose of this study is to contribute to parasocial relationship theory by exploring how this evolution of the interactive experience impacts celebrities, as well as presenting the first-hand experiences of celebrity participants. This study directly examines the celebrity perspective through semi-structured in-depth interviews with 13 celebrities from different creative backgrounds. Using thematic analysis (TA), this study found nine themes and 34 sub-themes explaining how celebrities interact with their fans, disclose personal details, form their identities, shape values and behavior, and indicate parasocial bonds with their fans. This study also used qualitative content analysis (QCA) to observe the social media posts of 10 celebrities and assess their online behavior for parasocial cues. By allowing for mutual exposure and a two-way channel of communication, this study found that social media platforms have made it possible for celebrities to develop reverse parasocial relationships with their fans that were not previously possible through traditional media. Other findings suggested that celebrity engagement with fans is not directly related to the type of celebrity, but rather the relation to the fan base itself.
