The Stolen Lives Project, which has been documenting cases of people killed by U.S. law enforcement since 1996, has mainly only existed in read-only forms, as both data and stories. This dissertation is the print version of a digital humanities project that lays the groundwork for bringing the Stolen Lives Project (SLP) to the World Wide Web as an accessible, usable and crowdsourced database with the aim of contributing to the social justice work to end police violence and the pedagogical work of modeling and encouraging critical reading and writing. This print version of the digital project also provides a history of the SLP and the current state of accountability and documentation of police homicides; the rationale for why the documentation is needed and why that of the SLP in particular is necessary, which includes an overview of critical lenses that inform on the approach taken by the SLP (critical discourse studies, critical media studies, critical race theory, social constructionism); a logistical plan for creating the online database and website; a draft of proposed guidelines that would eventually be accessible for anyone who would be interested in contributing to the documentation of the SLP; and a reflection on working on this project and navigating the intersections of activism and academia.
