Clinical laboratory scientists are in high demand. This profession is one of the top five healthcare professions facing a potentially critical shortage. Improving recruitment and retention in this field can have a positive impact on healthcare delivery overall. To identify reasons that affect recruitment and retention, it is necessary to look at reasons that affect employee satisfaction with the profession. If experts can make improvements in one of those areas through training, it stands to reason that this may improve job satisfaction, in turn improving retention and recruitment. A gap exists in the literature between job satisfaction and emotional intelligence as it pertains to clinical laboratory scientists. Clinical laboratory scientists from Oklahoma were recruited for this study. The entire group of willing respondents were tested with the Job Descriptive Index survey. Total participants were divided into a control and test group and emotional intelligence training was given to the test group. Participants were surveyed with the Job Descriptive Index before and after administration of emotional intelligence training and scores were compared before and after in the control and test group. The hypothesis was tested using the data collected and the null hypothesis was rejected. The data collected in this study revealed administration of emotional intelligence training in a control and test group yielded statistically significant evidence that intervention with emotional intelligence training improves job satisfaction. These findings could be used to address the shortage of clinical laboratory scientists.
