Suicide in older adults has been increasing. South Korea ranks the highest of all Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries in suicide rates. Korean Americans experience the highest suicide rates among Asian Americans. The correlation of rates shows the influence of culture within an ethnic group. Acknowledging why Korean American older adults' suicide rates have risen is crucial. In this thesis, the risk factors of suicide in Korean American older adults were assessed by conducting a self-reported survey in San Diego using the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9K). The biopsychosocial model integrates biological, psychological, and social factors as a framework to study diseases. This model was used to decipher the patterns and characteristics of high-risk individuals determining which unique mental health, physical health, and social environmental factors influenced depression and suicidal behaviors among Korean American elderly participants. Although the questionnaire did not provide significant evidence in support of the increasing suicide rate in elderly Korean Americans, it did illuminate various factors such as depression and perceived social support which may correlate with it. With these factors, proper solutions were developed to help this underserved community.
