While research on the impact of social media is vast, little investigation has focused on how it affects older adults who are increasingly interested in the technology (Zickuhr & Madden, 2012). Social networking has the ability to alleviate some of the more complex issues that are commonly associated with the older adult population. The purpose of the current study was to identify what impact social networking has had on older adults by measuring differences in quality of life and depression. The sample included 128 individuals, with a mean age of 73 years, who were either social networking users (n=74) or non-users (n=54) and who completed a survey with questions that related to their experience as older adults: Older Peoples Quality of Life Questionnaire (OPQOL), the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) and Mini-Modular Markers (3M-40) to asses personality. There was no significant difference between social network users and non-users when compared on both the OPQOL F(1,126) =.105, p = .747 η2 = .001 and GDS scales F(1,127) = .040, p = .843 η2 = .000. No significant correlation was found between the five factors of personality and the level of social network use among users R2 = .089, F(5,64) = 1.25, p = .297. Contrary to one of the hypotheses, among social networking users there was a positive relationship between their GDS scores and the amount of time users spent online rs (70) = .283, p = .008. Thus, among social networking users the more time an individual spends online, the more dysphoric symptoms they may experience. Limitations of the study and potential future areas of research are discussed.
