One of the reasons people may worry about being diagnosed with dementia is the lack of control associated with these diagnoses. If dementia-related anxiety (DRA) develops because of the associated declines in independence and control, it may be that planning for the future helps reduce that anxiety. Thus, this study investigated how experimentally manipulated dementia salience (DS) and sense of control (via advance care planning; ACP) contributed to DRA. Participants (aged 40-88, M = 65.66, SD = 9.71) were randomly assigned to a high or low DS induction and then completed an ACP checklist (a ratio score was computed with higher ratios indicating more planning completed). Multiple regression analyses were used to examine the relationships among the DS induction, ACP level, and DRA. The DS induction and ACP checklist did not significantly affect mean levels of DRA. Findings indicate that differences in levels of DRA were not attributed to individual's perceived efficacy regarding Alzheimer's disease and related disorders per ACP. DS condition and ACP levels also did not have any effect on participants' general sense of well-being. Additional one-way ANOVA analysis revealed a main effect of dementia exposure on DRA F(2, 119) = 3.60, p = 0.03. Specifically, participants with genetic exposure (M = 3.53, SD = 0.67) reported significantly (p = 0.02) higher levels of DRA than those who reported having non-genetic exposure (M = 3.20, SD = 0.64). Results suggest that genetic exposure is a particularly salient factor for DRA.
