Recent surges in the older adult population, along with rapid changes in sociocultural environments, have captured the attention of social scientists who aim to better understand the uncharted territory in which we now reside. One topic of interest is the increased popularity of bridge employment , which has been defined as employment after retirement from a long-term job but before permanent withdrawal from the workforce. This relatively new type of transition has been associated with broad implications in such areas as psychological identities, social relationships, work-life balance, financial status, and the lived experience of aging This qualitative study aimed to identify potential themes and directions for future research to help prepare the field of psychology to adapt to the changing needs of older adults and their families. Five participants above the age of 60 (the average retirement age in the United States is 62) were interviewed about their attitudes toward work and leisure activities before and during bridge employment. Interview data was analyzed, coded, and interpreted for thematic trends using Atchley's continuity theory. Results suggest that sociocultural factors have unique influences on individuals' experience of work-life balance throughout the lifespan, culminating in a range of attitudes toward such concepts as bridge employment, marriage and family life, financial concerns, and physical and mental health. The findings also underscore the importance of further exploring bridge employment as a new, and potentially long-term fixture of American retirement.
