Change in birth spacing patterns among married women is one of the important factors that has contributed to fertility decline in Taiwan. Birth spacing has been adopted by many groups as a means to obtain the desired number of children and ideal birth intervals. However, the literature indicates only limited work on analyses of birth spacing patterns in Taiwan. In this dissertation, I endeavor to ascertain the various factors affecting variation in birth spacing patterns among married women in their childbearing years in Taiwan in 1980. The data used in this dissertation are from a 1980 island-wide sample survey, also known as KAP (Knowledge, Attitude and Practice of family planning) survey. Cox's proportional hazards models provide an appropriate statistical technique for the analysis of the duration data. The effects of son preference and demographic, socioeconomic characteristics on the likelihoods of experiencing birth events are examined. Analyses focus on the first to the third birth intervals. The results show that the pace of giving birth tends to slow down as birth parity increases, and that intentional birth spacing is not prevalent for all married women prior to the first birth; the waiting times for the second and third births are longer for than the first birth. In addition to the demographic variables, economic status and wife's education are the most important factors affecting women's fertility tempo. Son preference, residential background, and husband's education are influential but only for the third birth interval. There seems to be a tendency to concentrate childbearing within a shorter time span for women who working outside the home. After the completion of Taiwan's fertility transition, it is expected that birth spacing will become more prevalent for all groups of women, and that women's educational and occupational attainment will be important factors determining the pace of childbearing. It is also expected that cohort and urban-rural differences tend to become less significant than they were shown to be in 1980.Subjects--Topical Terms:
