This dissertation is about the political liberaIization of Taiwan's authoritarian regime. My main question is: under what conditions can an opposition movement be incorporated into an authoritarian regime and thereby promote the liberalization of that regime? Drawing three case studies of opposition/regime relations (i.e., the Free China opposition movement, 1958-1960; the Tangwai movement, 1975-1979; and the most recent Tangwai movement, 1980-1986), that occurred in Taiwan over the past 38 years, this study seeks to explore the role of the opposition in the process of regime transformation. This study argues that the opposition by itself is not capable of pressuring the regime to reform. There must also be state's weakness or erosion of authority and the rise of the masses that produce this transformation. By explicating the three cases of opposition/regime relations, this study demonstrates that the regime's authority crisis (i.e., the eroding authority and the rise of the masses) in late 1984 and 1985, via the occurrences of various crisis-ridden events during this period, gave the opposition a historical opportunity to enlarge its demands upon the regime. Methodologically, this study adopts the negative comparative method and which is intended to locate--but not necessarily to isolate--important variables that explain the three sequential historical cases occurred in Taiwan. Moreover, although this study mainly stresses structural constraints, it does not ignore important individuals and their influence upon the evolution of Taiwan's politics. In order to assess the actual occurrences made by these important people, this study asks what were suppressed historical alternatives and why they did not occur. By comparing the actual occurrences and suppressed historical alternatives, this study offers a probabilistic interpretation of Taiwan's political transformation.Subjects--Topical Terms:
