I want to create transdisciplinary learning environments that bring together the arts, sciences, and computing in school-based education. My research is about figuring out how to improve learning in these disciplines by providing avenues for breaking down the siloed nature of disciplinary classrooms and changing practices that currently limit access to these disciplines for people with non-normative identities and practices. Transdisciplinary maker-based, technology-supported, representational practices could expand the normative sensemaking practices that artificially separate these disciplines. Luminous Science is a pedagogical meta-design that focuses on students answering a wide variety of wonder-based questions through investigations and creation of phenomenologically-anchored representations. I will share an iterative design-based research study of teacher and student enactments of Luminous Science and report on the types of affordances and tensions that arise in transdisciplinary education. My three-article dissertation presents three distinct, yet connected analyses that explore 1) the meta-design, 2) a concrete design instantiation developed with teachers, and 3) the resulting classroom implementations. In this concrete approach, teachers and students made dynamic, computationally-rich sculptural representations of data from a physical phenomenon, such as a classroom hydroponic garden. This work sheds light on how teachers and students engage with and navigate tensions in transdisciplinary learning. The research also explores implications for design of transdisciplinary curricular materials, professional development, and implementation practices for school environments where disciplinary segregation is still the norm.
