Gatekeeping has been studied from the counselor educator's perspective; however, few studies assess gatekeeping from the perspective of clinical counseling supervisors. Clinical counseling supervisors are charged with the professional obligation to protect the field; yet, there are no set standards of how to ethically and legally perform gatekeeping functions. The purpose of this generic qualitative inquiry is to investigate how clinical counseling supervisors engage in gatekeeping functions; specifically focusing on what processes are being performed, what processes are successfully working, and what are barriers or challenges to engaging in gatekeeping. This generic qualitative study explores the experiences of ten adult clinical counseling supervisors as they engaged in gatekeeping functions. In semi structured, one-on-one guided interviews, the participants provided their experiences of gatekeeping. The data was evaluated by thematic analysis. Data analysis by hand-coding yielded the following themes: modus operandi (MO), complexity (C), and weighted responsibility (WR). While the lack of professional standards, insufficient training, lack of support from the profession, and internal conflicts were described as barriers to performing gatekeeping functions, the findings identified training, collaboration, and experience, as professional strengths to engaging in gatekeeping. The clinical counseling supervisors shared similar experiences when engaging in gatekeeping; however, they offered differing levels of self-assurance based upon development and experience. Limitations to this study included a small sample, the researcher's lack of experience, and the lack of expansive developmental steps in the research theory. Furthermore, interviewing diverse licensures is not specialization specific and may lack relevance to specific licensing fields. Recommendations for future research include gathering a larger and more diverse sample, using a different methodology, and potentially using a different developmental theory.
