This interpretative phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of thirteen Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs) related to documentation and documenting their work of a providing counseling services. Three research questions guided this study: "What are LPCs' experiences of documenting their work providing counseling services," "What experiences contribute to LPCs' documenting skill development," and "How does the experience of documenting work with clients affect LPCs' perceived competence?" Semi-structured interviews were conducted and ten themes emerged from the data: Documentation tells a story, covers the LPC, justifies pay and time, skills develop through training and work experience, benefits from structure and supervision, skills improve when work is reviewed, is an important part of counseling, takes time, can have an impact on the client, and can influence how others view the LPC's competence. Key findings indicate counselors perceive documentation as serving different purposes, documenting skills are developed through learning from more experienced counselors and from documenting work with clients, and documenting does not affect perceived competence but may have indirect effects on job performance. These findings are consistent with the major themes in relevant studies involving other healthcare professionals and provide a unique perspective from the viewpoint of counselors and therapists who primarily identify professionally as an LPC. This research identifies important implications for counselor educators and supervisors, accreditation bodies, state licensing boards, agencies that employ LPCs, and professional organizations.
