Empathy, mindfulness, and compassion were investigated as predictors of countertransference, secondary traumatic stress, and client-related burnout. Participants were 82 counseling student interns ranging in age from 22-62. Higher levels of reported affective empathy, both disconnection and contagion, were related to greater negative affect countertransference, secondary trauma symptoms, and client-related burnout. The mindfulness facet of nonreactivity was inversely related to all outcome variables. Higher levels of acting with awareness were related to lower reported negative affect countertransference and arousal symptoms of secondary traumatic stress. Other-focused compassion was not a significant predictor of the outcome variables. Significant covariates of age, race, supervisory relationship, and life stress outside of internship were identified. Implications of the study apply to counseling educators, supervisors, and counseling students. The identification of strategies to counteract negative impacts of affective empathy, while increasing levels of mindfulness within counseling students as they encounter the critical incidents of countertransference, secondary trauma, or burnout is essential. Supervisors require the awareness that ethical issues of overinvolvement with clients or disconnection from clients could be present as affective empathy increases with the potential development of secondary trauma and burnout. Future research directions include examining the benefits of mindfulness training and preventative self-care for counseling students prior to the experiential learning present during internship.
