Personal awareness is an aspect of counselor education training that is not quantified within the literature, but remains a required component of training in accordance with ethical and accreditation standards. The supervisory relationship can provide the forum for an exploration of personal awareness issues. Models of supervision formulate how a supervisor may facilitate personal awareness in reference to a student's developmental level. This study will review the literature in terms of personal awareness in counselor education as it relates to CACREP standards, the supervisory relationship, students' psychological and professional developmental level, and models of supervision. The purpose of this study is to (a) examine the use of personal awareness within supervision and/or counselor education, (b) understand what occurs in supervision and/or counselor education to facilitate personal awareness, and (c) to explore the lived experiences of students and counselor educators' perceptions regarding the construct of personal awareness used within counselor education and supervision.
