The research topic is clinical supervision for entry-level counselors who provide counseling in nontraditional settings. Entry-level counselors require clinical supervision to become fully licensed in the United States. In addition, clinical supervision safeguards client welfare, maintains the integrity of the profession, and promotes the counselor's professional development. Many entry-level counselors obtain employment with community mental health centers, which are increasingly providing mental health services outside the traditional office. Counseling in nontraditional settings has both benefits and challenges. Benefits include increased access to mental health services for unprivileged and underserved populations. Ethical issues and safety concerns are among the identified challenges inherent in providing mental health services outside the traditional office. A generic qualitative methodology, interpretive description, was utilized to study the clinical supervision experiences of entry-level counselors working in nontraditional settings. A sample of 10 counselors from two southern states participated in this study. All 10 counselors had experience providing counseling in nontraditional settings while receiving clinical supervision for licensure. Constant comparative analysis was applied to the data collected through an iterative process. Although the study focused on clinical supervision specific to the challenges of home-based counseling, several findings are applicable to clinical supervision for all entry-level counselors. The study confirmed the importance of a perceived positive supervisory relationship on overall satisfaction with clinical supervision received. The supervisory relationship was found to impact the level of supervisee disclosure of ethical concerns. Group supervision provided supervisees with increased support and problem solving. Specific to home-based counseling, the study found clinical supervisors with experience providing counseling in nontraditional settings had increased understanding and practical solutions for the ethical concerns and safety issues common to home-based counseling. Additionally, supervisor experience increased job retention of counselors working in nontraditional settings. Finally, supervisee disclosure of ethical concerns and safety issues was found to be conditional on the supervisory relationship, supervisee previous job experience, and a lack of concern regarding the issues. These findings may have practical implications for clinical supervisors of entry-level counselors, specifically those working in nontraditional settings. In addition, the field of counselor education and supervision may use the findings to incorporate counseling in nontraditional settings within curriculum and training. Due to the limitations of this study, including geographic areas, small sample size, and the targeted focus of supervision theory, further research is warranted.
