A probabilistic framework for assessing the condition of structural concrete due to moisture contained within cured concrete using a 10 GHz synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging system is proposed in this doctoral dissertation. SAR imaging of concrete specimens with different moisture contents and water-to-cement (w/c) ratios were performed to generate data for the development of the condition assessment framework. The SAR images were analyzed by extracting a numerical index (integrated SAR amplitude), which was used as the basis for quantitative analysis. Integrated SAR amplitude was found to increase exponentially with the moisture content of concrete for all the considered w/c ratios (0.35~0.55). Also, at a constant moisture content (0.25%~4.0%), integrated SAR amplitude decreased with the increase in the w/c ratio of concrete. A reliability model was developed using the moisture content model and Monte Carlo simulation techniques. The result of reliability analysis indicates that the moisture content of concrete measured with SAR follows a normal distribution. The proposed probabilistic framework was also applied to the deterioration of steel reinforcement due to the corrosion process. The relationship between loss of steel reinforcement and SAR images was observed to follow a three-parameter lognormal distribution. The findings from this research indicate that the SAR imaging technique is viable for measuring the loss of steel reinforcement and evaluating moisture conditions of concrete specimens using reliability-based methods. The study concludes that the proposed framework can be applied to the condition assessment of reinforced concrete structures in the field.
