Game writing is a relatively new occupation, and as a result, both research into it, and materials to teach it are still scarce. To many writers, it doesn't even appear as a valid application of one's creative endeavors. This project was conceived as a writer's creative, personal exploration of what it means to write for a game and how it differs from other, more orthodox forms of writing.Playwriting was chosen as the form of creative writing to compare game writing to. Because this project is a creative writing piece, and not a scholarly inquiry, the three chosen genres to approach this issue are: a play, a game script, and a collection of personal essays and commentaries on the process of writing the two.The final text, thus, comprises a hybrid, cross-genre artistic exploration of writing for a play and writing for a game.Playwriting is a well-recognized literary occupation empowered with centuries of practice, research, and perfection. It has a well-established tradition, formatting, and abundant instruction. It is also a form of writing which presupposes collaboration and a visual component, as well as some degree of 'prescriptiveness' because it is intended to eventually be worked on by a team and translated into a performance (staging). Finally, many of the playwriting masterpieces, even though universally acknowledged as works of art, have been created first and foremost for the purpose of entertainment.Game writing is possibly the newest major form of creative writing, due to video games being an emergent medium, arguably still in its formative phase. There is barely any coherent instruction on game writing, the expectations and formatting are not only non-standardized but can also differ from game to game depending on many factors including gameplay work distribution within each team. However, like playwriting, game writing is expected to be mindful of the subsequent collaboration and 'realization' of the text in a visual or scripted form (the game itself) and possesses the same tension between entertainment and artistry. Both forms have their respective challenges, limitations, and strengths - all discussed at length in the last section of this project.
