Technology is changing the skills that workers need to develop, and therefore business leaders will need to adapt. As opposed to the domain focused depth of knowledge workers of the third industrial revolution, the fourth industrial revolution requires workers who are relationship workers, refining their skills in systems-working processes through data relationships-and with people-focusing on empathy and other elements of emotional intelligence. The current study is a case study of business leaders within a global services organization, exploring how they are leading their people with respect to technology, system-level thinking, and empathy. The results indicate that leaders are prepared for change, focused on big data integration, have a desire for purpose and meaningful relationships, understand the pull towards productivity, and elevate the importance of communication. Leaders championed diversity, learning, and solution-solving within their teams. The current study serves as a starting point for organizations that want to integrate the concept of leading relationship workers, where relationships are both organizational processes and personal connections and introduces a clear need for leaders today to continually adapt.
