The construction of transportation infrastructure reduces trade costs and affects regional development. Notably, the highway network that connects metropolitan areas with less developed peripheries. Taking Yunnan province in China as a case study, this paper studies how the change in highway connection affects the county-level population size in Yunnan. Following Faber (2014) to construct the least cost spanning tree as an instrument, this paper enriches the existing literature by taking Yunnan province in China as a case study. The estimation results show that the change in highway connection status leads to a higher growth rate for the total population and promotes urban-rural migration, which could be driven by the effect on the youth generation.
