This study examines various factors to identify which variables have an effect on donor giving year-over-year and over a lifetime. Data spanning nine years from one Power Five institution was used in this study. The impact of economic conditions, geographic region, and athletic success was studied in relation to year-over-year giving and lifetime giving. Significance was found for economic conditions including economic growth and inflation, donors residing in the same state as the institution, and athletic success using football regular season wins and men's basketball tournament wins. These results enable development officers to better understand, target, and engage with certain donors. While this study breaks new ground in its analysis of a variety of factors over a nine-year period, future research is encouraged to investigate the potential influence of alumni status, being a former student-athlete, and what age a donor began giving.
