The purpose of this study is to examine factors that influence National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I basketball teams to sustain high performance levels. Factors include: leadership of coach, longevity of coach, recruiting of student-athletes, academic eligibility, scholarly success of student-athlete, one and done rule, culture, donors, and financial resources. In addition, this study will look at the predominant factor or combination of factors that NCAA Division I coaches believe are most important to sustain high performance levels. In this qualitative method, data will be gathered from former or current NCAA Division I head or assistant coaches who have won conference championships, national championships, or both, by engaging in in-depth interviews, university media relations offices, the Knights Commission report on Intercollegiate Athletics, and NCAA websites. It is anticipated that themes will emerge, and findings will provide insight into what multiple factors coaches use to sustain high performance levels to win championships.
