The U.S. immigration has been a subject of legislation since the country was founded dating back to 1790, when Congress established that all people born from foreign countries attained citizenship status in the country. The U.S. is also one of the world's main exporter of agricultural commodities and over half of the hired workers employed in crop agriculture especially fruits and vegetables are not authorized to work. However, the current administration's immigration policy of 'Zero Tolerance', which includes increased boarder security and increased deportation will have a significant impact on this industry. This study examines the effects of U.S. immigration policies on exports of fruits and vegetables using the Seemingly Unrelated Regression-Vector Auto Regression approach. Data was collected for values of U.S. exports to Canada, Mexico, and Japan as well as their exchange rates and GDP per capita from 1970-2017. The results from the study show that exports to Canada and Mexico as well as the overall gross domestic product (GDP) of U.S. are positively affected by immigrant labor. The overall implication of this study is that, U.S. immigration policies that are favourable to the agricultural sector have the potential to tremendously promote fruits and vegetables export and thereby improving the country's agricultural trade surplus.
