Eight certified Wellcoaches participated in this qualitative case study evaluation that investigated how the 18-week Wellcoaches training program affected the perceptions of personal and professional competence and workplace experience. Participants were healthcare practitioners, educators and/or clinicians who engage with patients diagnosed with diabetes. The goal of the study was to find out how certified coaches in healthcare apply what they learned from the training program. Although past studies investigated coaches using the Wellcoaches model with clients (Sforzo et al., 2017), no studies have been conducted that evaluated the training program. Following Yin's (2014) case study protocol, methods of data collection included a questionnaire, semi-structured interview, and archived training evaluations; data analysis included pattern matching. Identified themes were organized around the training program, learned competence, and outcomes. The findings related to aspects of the training program that supported behavior change included: the science-based content, the in-class practice, facilitator of the live class, working with a practice client, and the learning partner assignments focused on relationship building. The core coaching competencies that participants learned to use confidently and effectively with themselves, colleagues, patients/clients, and personal relationships included: mindfulness, perceptive reflections, open-ended inquiry; Wellcoaches initial and ongoing checklists; empathy and compassion; and motivational interviewing. Business outcomes included participants believed the training positively impacted their personal business and/or career. Participants reported their patients experienced decreases in body weight/BMI, AIC, and insulin/medication usage; and increases in nutrition habits, engagement / goal achievement, and family support/relationships. Finally, personal wellness for the participants improved in one or more of these ways: increase in self-compassion, mindfulness/meditation, vision and goal achievement, job satisfaction, and impact on relationships. The findings of this study support the existing literature on the impact coach training can have on the patient and the practitioner. These results also emphasize the aspects of a wellness coach training program that instructional designers can utilize when delivering the curriculum. Future research is needed to standardize a process for evaluating wellness coach training, as well as investigating the benefits wellness coach training has on practitioners' personal wellness and professional experience.
