Background: A partially invasive treatment option for carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), before considering surgery, is corticosteroid injection (CsI). Other non-invasive, conservative treatments for CTS that this meta-analysis compares with CsI include the following: focused extracorporeal shock wave therapy, low-level laser therapy (LLLT), ultrasound (US), EMLA cream, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, oral corticosteroid, and radial extracorporeal shock wave therapy (rESWT).Methods: In these studies, the control group received a single injection of CsI, and the intervention group received its respective conservative treatments as mentioned above. Outcome measures included verbal analog scale (VAS), sensory distal latency (SDL), and motor distal latency (MDL).Results: For VAS, 3 studies favored the interventions-LLLT, rESWT, and US. For SDL and MDL, LLLT and rESWT, respectively, were favored over CsI.Conclusions: The results of these studies indicate that the effects of CsI to conservative treatments for CTS are inconclusive. However, non-invasive, conservative treatments may offer patients with CTS an alternative to CsI without its invasiveness.
