Purpose: The purpose of this meta-analysis is to examine the effects of resistance exercise (RE) compared to weight-bearing aerobic exercise (WBAE) on bone mineral density (BMD), fall risk, and quality of life (QOL) in postmenopausal women with low bone mass. Methods: A literature search of 6 databases was conducted from August to September 2019. Outcome measures included the following: BMD, timed up-and-go (TUG), Berg balance scale (BBS), QOL Questionnaire of the European Foundation for Osteoporosis, and 36-Item Short Form Health Survey. A random effects model for one group was used for statistical analysis. Results: Seven studies met the inclusion criteria. RE (0.16) and WBAE (0.11) show a small effect in improving BMD. RE and WBAE showed equally large effect sizes (-1.08) for decreasing TUG times. RE showed a moderate effect size (0.57) on improving BBS scores, and WBAE showed a small effect size (0.27). RE showed a large effect size (-1.06) on improving QOL while WBAE showed a moderate effect size (-0.59).Conclusion: RE and WBAE improve BMD, decrease fall risk, and improve QOL in postmenopausal women with low bone mass. However, RE may be more effective in improving these measures.
