This study investigated the relationship between yoga and emotional regulatory strategies, depression, anxiety, and stress among people who practice yoga, people who engage in only non-yoga exercise, and people who do not exercise at all using a quantitative methodology. A demographics questionnaire, The Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (CERQ), and The Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS) were used for this study. Three main research questions were analyzed: 1) Is there a relationship between yoga and emotional regulatory strategies assessed by the CERQ? 2) Is there a difference in emotion regulation strategies between adults who engage in only non-yoga physical activity and adults who practice yoga? 3) Is there a relationship between yoga and scores on the DASS? Results suggest that those who practice yoga engage in Positive Reappraisal, or assign a positive meaning to a negative event/experience, more than people who do not. Contrary to existing literature, results indicated there was no relationship between yoga and emotion regulation strategies, such as Rumination, Catastrophizing, and Acceptance. Findings from this study demonstrated there was a statistically significant difference in Depression scores for individuals who practice yoga and those who do not. Specifically, that people who practice yoga had lower scores of Depression than people who do not practice yoga. Results from an exploratory one-way ANOVA demonstrated that people who do yoga regularly had significantly higher Positive Reappraisal scores than people who do non-yoga exercise or no exercise at all. This indicates that a regular yoga practice may be associated with one's ability to assign a positive meaning or positive reframe to a negative internal experience. Additional exploratory findings revealed a relationship between practicing yoga and an increase in adaptive emotion regulation strategies and a decrease in Stress and Depression scores when compared to people who do not exercise at all. As more studies find a significant benefit to yoga, therapists should have more confidence in routinely recommending it for their patients.
