Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Manchester (United Kingdom), 2007.
Over the past 10 years there has been a tremendous effort on the development of low-cost and high-volume electronic devices based on organic semiconductors. The most important applications include Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLEDs), Organic Field Effect Transistors (OFETs) and solar cells. The development of new synthetic routes to prepare conjugated polymers and copolymers with novel compositions and controlled structures has been a central goal. This thesis presents an investigation of the synthesis and the properties of conjugated polymers and block copolymers with controlled structures. Chapter 1 gives a brief introduction to organic semiconductors and the aims of the project. In Chapter 2 the preparation and characterisation of cyclophanediene-based monomers is described. Chapter 3 focuses on the preparation and characterisation of conjugated homopolymers via Ring Opening Metathesis Polymerisation (ROMP). Polymers with well-defined molecular weights with an alternating cis-trans microstructure are described. Chapter 4 describes the preparation and characterisation of conjugated block copolymers based on phenylenevinylene derivatives with special attention on the optical properties and the thermal behaviour. Finally, an overview of the project and some suggestions for future work are presented in Chapter 5.
