3D printing on board can provide a unique way to solve problems in the marine environment. In the isolated environment of the maritime industry 3D printing can supplement repairs by providing replacement parts. Ships operate in an isolated environment either when ships are hundreds of miles off land or in countries that don't have the supplies need to make the necessary repairs. Traditionally ships must make do with what they have on board by either producing the part they need by using the machine shop on board or by carrying the replacement parts with them. If the ship needs a part, that they do not have on board or they cannot produce it themselves. The vessel's only option is to obtain the part when it makes the next port call. This is often not an easy task. Since many parts needed are specific to the vessel or type of machinery on board. It may have to fly across the world to meet the ship and then clear customs. This may take a few days or hours delaying the ship. With the advancement of 3D printing, the printers can print higher quality parts. These parts can be printed in varied materials. Ranging from metal, flexible martial, or an array of plastics. The newer 3D printers can produce parts well enough to be used in the marine environment. These are the materials that can be used in vital engine room repairs to even everyday operations. The parts that would normally be carried on board, wouldn't have to be carried. These parts can be produced on board. The file of the part would just have to be carried and the material required to produce the part. If the part isn't normally carried on board, the part can be produced on board. This can happen if the print file for the part is emailed to the ship or the parts can also be designed on board by the engineering department. This process would be ideal for tricky situations that arise at sea. Traditional means of fabrication on board can only produce so much.
