The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to see if existing local, state, and federal programs are sufficiently targeting business development services and programs to reach African American women and thereby impacting the African American community as a whole. The research study was design to delve into intersectionality of race, gender, and class as perceived by 20 African American female business owners in San Antonio, Texas. This study sought to provide an opportunity to discover and investigate African American women entrepreneurs' stories and to gain knowledge that may offer insight into the underrepresentation of African American business owners in training, funding, and overall business development and exposure. The researcher explored this topic to gain a better understanding of this demographic, thereby being able to assist agencies, leaders and educators as they strive for diversity and inclusion. The study can serve numerous purposes, one of the main ones being the development of best practices by state and local agencies to be more inclusive. A phenomenological research method was suitable for this study to gasp a better understanding of the participants and their lived experiences as a African American female business owner and whether state, local and federal agencies were doing their due diligence to reach them. While African American female business owners are the fastest growing entrepreneurship group, access to training, resources, and mentors remain insufficient. As substantiated by the literature review, research still needs to be rendered. All participants had been in business for a minimum of three months, and face to face interviews were conducted at a local business incubator. Data was collected via semi-structured interviews and entered into a secure password protected software program. The findings revealed several themes including family history, mentorship, and community impact. Critical race theory guided the study and findings support previous studies as it relates to this demographic. This research will add dept to the body of knowledge revolving around intersectionality and inclusion as well as African American female business owners and the community impact that they have. It will also assist agencies locally, statewide, and federally in understanding their role for potential capacity building of minority businesses, in particular African American female business owners. The primary recommendation from the research is to advance the resources and opportunities that are available for African-American female business owners.
