This paper is an account of the conservation and mounting of a ca. 1775 French court dress (C.I.61.13.1a, b) in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute. The first sections describe the garment in detail and contextualize it within the history of textiles and fashion. A description of the condition of the dress follows. Visual examination of the garment was supplemented by technical analysis. Size Exclusion Chromatography (SEC) and Near-Infrared (NIR) Spectroscopy were considered as possible methods for quantifying the degradation of the silk textile. Ultimately, pH measurement served this purpose. The pink dye, which had faded significantly, was identified using High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). The next chapters recount the results of two research initiatives that explored the conservation of eighteenth-century fashion broadly. First, a survey of eighteenth-century womenswear revealed patterns of degradation and made it possible to assess both successes and unforeseen consequences of treatments the garments had undergone previously. Second, interviews with working conservators provided an understanding of the approaches to conserving and exhibiting eighteenth-century fashion that are in use today. Finally, the preparation of the dress for exhibition is discussed. Conservation treatment consisted of stitched repairs to stabilize structural damage and efforts to restore three-dimensionality to the garment's self-fabric trim. Alterations to the dress were investigated, and a reproduction stomacher was made to stand in for the missing original while the dress was on display. The paper concludes with a description of the process of mounting the court dress on a mannequin.
