In this dissertation, I researched the influence of near-death experience (NDE) aftereffects on religious and spiritual beliefs. These belief systems have a significant impact not only on people's daily views, but also on the way people interface with their families, communities, and society. This research is focused on how NDE aftereffects, with their profound psychological and ontological impacts, transformed participants' beliefs, activities, and relationships. My own NDE and decades of inquiry into NDE research provided a sense of tacit knowing and unity with this research, especially with the research participants in their interviews. This unity was strengthened by the choice of the heuristic research method that positions the researcher inside the research. The research problem was as follows: What are the effects of NDEs on religious and spiritual beliefs? A second problem investigated was, what gaps in the research on the aftereffects of near-death experiences on religious and spiritual beliefs may be filled using heuristic methods? What heuristic research tools are useful in understanding perceptions, levels of consciousness, and behavior when individuals undergo an NDE? Can the heuristic method better research an emotional crisis that may be a defining element when looking for religious and spiritual aftereffects? Does the emotional crisis that occurs with the NDE continue to be manifested in religious and spiritual aftereffects? The research question was as follows: How do NDErs define and how do they present their NDE religious and spiritual aftereffects? My own NDE and decades of inquiry into NDE research provided a sense of tacit knowing and unity with this research, especially with the research participants in their interviews. This unity was strengthened by the choice of the heuristic research method that positions the researcher inside the research. Twelve participants responded to an International Association for Near-Death Studies request and took part in 60-90 minute interviews addressing 10 questions provided to them prior to the interviews. The inclusion criteria involved selecting 12 participants out of the first 14 who responded and all 12 validated their NDEs for research purposes, by scoring above a 7 or above the NDE Scale. Research findings from the 10 questions, included that the 12 interviewees had a combined 26 NDEs, their circumstances comprised of seven accidents and 19 illnesses. All 12 had a type of out-of-body experience, and all found themselves in the company or presence of a divinity or a deceased family member. All of the interviewees eventually reached a positive outcome or experience from their NDE, although three also had a hellish experience at some point in their NDE. All 12 spoke of having new psychic abilities after their NDEs. Ten of the 12 interviewees became less religious and more spiritual. All of the interviewees experienced some family disharmony and unrest resulting from the NDE. Also, all of the interviewees believe their NDEs made them better persons, primarily by awakening or strengthening feelings of empathy and love for humankind. The participant demographics, age, sex, etc., are listed in Table 1, p. 68.
