Laws enforced for sex offenders are structured in such a way as to exert a greater level of social control for those whom have been convicted. Sex offenders are forced to register their information, including a photograph of themselves post sentence. These registrations are state based and are accessible to the public community. In addition to registration laws, community notification laws also exist, in which policy enforcers distribute information to laypeople about sex offenders residing in the community. Such laws have drastically negative effects on sex offender's ability to successfully reintegrate into society post release. Sex offenders often experience fear, isolation, and harassment. Such negative consequences may influence sex offender's recidivism and may in fact endanger the community, instead of protecting it, as this was the intention of such laws. Much of the current literature on sex offenders consists of information gathered about male offenders. In addition, such literature often quantifies experiences, instead of gathering qualitative data. The current study sought to investigate female sex offenders' experience of reintegrating into society, while having to register and abide by restricting laws. This study utilized a phenomenological method in which female sex offenders described their experiences of having their name on a statewide registry. Four women participated in the current study and data was collected through non-directive semi-structured interviews. Analysis of the data revealed that many of the women felt that they were viewed in a particularly negative way. They often struggled to feel secure in social situations and had lost friends and family members since their alleged crimes. Many of the women were also victims of inappropriate sexual advances, as well as the victim of other forms of vigilantism after their crime became public knowledge. Many of the women needed to partake in sex therapy, which they all found to be triggering and unhelpful. Many of the women also struggled to find work and keep up with registry and day-to-day expenses. Overall, the women felt stuck and that regardless of their contributions to society, they felt an overwhelming sense of lack of redemption. The purpose of this literature was to increase efforts for sex offender research in order to better understand and appreciate one's set of experiences. It was also the hope that this research would shed light on the experiences of such women so as to adequately aid in the integration of necessary mental health needs into psychological practices. This research ultimately hoped to aid in healing, recovery, and reintegration of women, as they transition back into society.
