According to the theory of Cognitive Architecture there are architectural principles that are subconsciously preferable to humans. Taking these principles into account, it is hypothesized that traditional buildings are more subconsciously attention grabbing than modern buildings. Subconscious fixations, which denotes fascination, is associated with memory formation, and thus indicates how memorable a building is. Thirty-nine photographs of buildings around Boston, Massachusetts and Da Nang, Vietnam were uploaded into Visual Attention Software (VAS) by 3M, an eye-tracking emulation software. The results of VAS indicated that in Da Nang and Boston, there were more fixation points on the traditional facades, which therefore were more subconsciously attractive and memorable than modern facades. It is recommended that policy should encourage design standards that proliferate the number of traditional facades and encourage the continuation of historic preservation. Foliage, lights and flags can also be added to create fixation points and enhance the memorability of facades.
