In interscholastic athletics, the number of female administrators is substantially lower than the number of male administrators. Women have been historically underrepresented in all aspects of athletics since its inception. Career advancement for women have been negatively impacted. The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine gender inequality as it pertained to the lack of female athletic administrators in high school sports. The social role theory and the role congruity theory formed the basis of the theoretical framework for this study. The social role theory suggested there are behavioral differences between men and women, thus signifying gender expectations that governed the rules of a given society. As an extension of the social role theory, the role congruity theory permeated gender bias against women and delegated positions of leadership of power to men. To examine the disparity between men and women leadership roles in interscholastic athletics, seven members of a high school athletic department relied on their experiences to share their perspectives about the barriers and challenges that hindered women from achieving administrative roles through face-to-face, opened interviews. From a narrative of the data emerged six themes(a) gender bias resulted in unfair treatment of women, (b) gender stereotypes viewed men as superior and women as inferior to men, (c) discrimination against women resulted in unequal pay and lack of career advancement, (d) the concept of hegemonic masculinity marginalizes women, (e) the good 'Old Boys' network is an institution that honors male dominance, and (f) the concept of homologous reproduction suggested male administrators only hire men. Findings should benefit females aspiring to advance to athletic administrative positions, current athletic administrators, and sports owners by providing and understanding of the factors that contributed to the lack of female administrators within the athletic department. Future research is required to gain a comprehensive understanding.
