Ecclesiology has commonly been identified as the most unresolved issue remaining from the Reformation. Exacerbated by the anti-authoritarian and individualist spirit associated with modernity, Protestant ecclesiology finds itself weakened by the lack of established doctrine, the continued fracturing of the church into rival ecclesial bodies, and the privatization of faith. In light of these challenges, this project sets forth a theological framework for guiding reflection and action in the context of North American church life that leads to a more generous ecclesiological perspective. The word "generous" conveys three main emphases of this project. First, it refers to an ecclesiology rooted in the theological fundamentals of God's nature and activity. Fully funded by these core doctrines of the Christian faith, a generous ecclesiology understands the church to be a freely chosen creation of God, commissioned to mirror and embody God's abundant love and mercy to the world. Second, "generous" expresses the ecumenical spirit of this project that honors the fullness of the apostolic tradition that has carried the faith throughout the universal church and inspired reforms for the sake of that faith. Finally, "generous" relates to the principal aim of this project, the rehabilitation of Paul Tillich as a theologian for the church and the retrieval of his thought for the pressing theological tasks of today. I argue that Tillich offers an ecumenically-minded ecclesiological proposal that integrates reformers of all ages into a genuinely catholic understanding of the church that is theologically united in the Spirit. Furthermore, his proposal provides a pneumatological antidote to the theological fragmentation and secularizing effects generated by rampant autonomy as well as to heteronomous tendencies in which ecclesial authorities, whether church hierarchy or dogma, are viewed as absolutes. Rooted in core theological commitments, Tillich articulates a dynamic understanding of church life in which churches need not abandon their distinctive identity nor withdraw from public, world-engaging activities. In the end, Tillich's generous ecclesiology creates a compelling theological vision for the church as it lives out its vocation in service of the Kingdom of God.
