This study was designed to examine the views and ideas of student-athletes within a university athletic program in Baltimore, Maryland on the idea of forming a college athletes' union. There have been numerous writings and discussions involving the business of college athletics, student-athletes, and academic reforms. Once the student-athletes-specifically the football players-at Northwestern University instituted an action toward unionizing and collective bargaining, the dialogue shifted. The literature on student-athlete "rights" has been limited, and the actions involving the student-athletes at Northwestern received limited media coverage offering some challenges in obtaining information outside the greater Chicago, Illinois area. Putterman and Nadkarni (2014) of the Daily Northwestern covered these proceedings to their conclusion, which provided the catalyst to conduct this qualitative research case study. The NCAA, entering its second century as the executor of college athletics, has been experiencing some pushback involving its policies of which the student-athletes at Northwestern University sought to address via the legal process. This study explored the views and ideas student-athletes at a university athletic program in Baltimore, Maryland regarding forming a college athletes' union, the immediate restructuring to college athletics, the university, and its revised role, including the student-athletes revised role (the primary stakeholder) and the economics associated with college sports in particular, the college football playoff to the final four. The participants indicated via their responses, a college athletes' union is necessary to bring about the needed reforms presented by the student-athletes at Northwestern University.
