The purpose of this qualitative narrative study was to understand the motivations that drive Indonesian faculty at large, private universities in Jakarta, Indonesia to improve their teaching and scholarship in a Confucian model of organizational leadership. The theoretical foundations for this study came from self-determination theory and focused on said basic psychological needs. The snowball sample consisted of eight Indonesian university faculty who participated in semi-structured interviews that were analyzed to determine how said faculty members might best be motivated to improve as well as to understand the influence of Confucian leadership in such a setting. Narrative analysis of the data revealed 8 major themes: autonomy, creativity, competence, relatedness, work environment, Confucian leadership model, general motivations, and motivation to improve. It was determined that Indonesian faculty indeed are motivated by their basic psychological needs of autonomy, relatedness and competence being met in the workplace. Additionally, it was found that in a Confucian model of leadership, while Indonesian faculty report low levels of autonomy, they are still motivated to improve when the basic psychological needs of competence and relatedness are being bet. This supports previous research suggesting that autonomy in a non-Western setting may have less importance than it does in a Western setting. Finally, it was determined that meeting the basic psychological needs will indeed increase motivation in Indonesian higher education faculty.
