Based on ethnographic fieldwork in a rural community, this dissertation examines how changes in Cambodia's political economy shape the daily lives of youth and their families. After three decades of violent conflict and socialist planning, Cambodia's economy was liberalized in the 1990s. Since then, rural spaces have been incorporated more deeply into a market economy, traditional agrarian livelihoods have become less viable, and inequality has grown dramatically. My work reveals the anxieties of trying to live a comfortable and meaningful life in this time of uncertainty. I argue that as young people and their families respond to economic pressures, kin have become ever more dependent upon one another and intergenerational relationships have been reworked. Each chapter illustrates how these shifts are felt in intimate ways in the spaces of homes and schools. I begin by looking at the rapid growth of microfinance indebtedness, and how it deepens intergenerational dependency. Next, I analyze how the commercialization of the wedding industry and the concomitant rise in bridewealth prices have destabilized the traditional life course for young men. I then illustrate how rural families increasingly invest in their children's education in an attempt to secure their economic future. Finally, I examine how youth are critical of local corruption because it pressures them to rely on their families for money and connections in order to achieve their educational and career aspirations. My research advances the youth studies literature by moving beyond the analysis of a single age group to look at young people's experiences within the context of their familial relationships. It also deepens our understanding of how capitalist transformations underway in Cambodia and beyond are felt in people's everyday lives.
